In the United States, we actively support programs addressing youth development. The ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program provides college students with paid internships to nonprofit organizations and the ExxonMobil Green Team Summer Youth Program provides summer employment for high school youth. In addition, we support the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, U.S.A., Boys and Girls Clubs of America, and the YMCA and YWCA.
Outside the United States, our community involvement extends well beyond philanthropy to job creation, support for local economies and businesses, and development of community infrastructure. In 2009, we provided more than $2.7 million for development of community, health and education infrastructure and skills training programs in Nigerian communities. In Sakhalin, Russia, we provided more than $3.3 million to upgrade local roads, bridges and sanitation infrastructure. In Kazakhstan, our share of community funding for road upgrades, gas, electric, and water supply projects and school construction programs through TCO and Agip KCO joint venture projects totaled more than $10.9 million.
In 2009, we contributed toward disaster relief and recovery efforts around the world. ExxonMobil Australia Ltd. donated $AUS750,000 to the Australian Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund in support of relief efforts following fires that devastated parts of the state of Victoria. Esso Italiana donated 500,000 Euro toward reconstruction efforts following a massive earthquake that devastated the central Italina region of Abruzzo. ExxonMobil Oil Indonesia provided $300,000 U.S. to two Indonesian relief agencies — MER-C and Dompet Dhuafa — following several earthquakes that impacted west Sumatra.
Through formal Volunteer Involvement Programs in many countries around the world, ExxonMobil encourages employees and retirees to contribute their time and talent to their communities. In 2009, more than 23,800 ExxonMobil employees, retirees, and their families donated more than 678,000 volunteer hours to more than 5,100 charitable organizations in 35 countries through company-sponsored programs.
