Ever since Norway's offshore oil activities began in the 1960s, ExxonMobil has been one of the most important players on the Norwegian continental shelf. The company had an oil and gas production in 2007 of around 436,000 barrels oil equivalent per day.

ExxonMobil has over the years been a substantial investor on the Norwegian continental shelf. In 2007 the company invested NOK 6,6 billion, and over the last 15 years the company has invested around 90 billion NOK in Norway. ExxonMobil intends to be a long-term player on the Norwegian continental shelf. The future of  the company is, however, dependent on high quality acreage being made available, and on satisfactory economic frame conditions.
